Review of 2612 Cherryhill Lane
Reading 2612 Cherryhill Lane by Glenn Vo has been an emotion filled roller coaster that I am sad to come off. Mr. Vo has seamlessly written Jon’s love story with God, Samantha, his friends and his family. The pace of the novel was slow, descriptive and allowed the reader to delve into Jonathon’s world with the emotional tumult that resulted from his unfortunate car accident. Despite his fall from grace, Jonathon was able to not only overcome his past but to create a future for himself that both honored his past and his present. Mr. Vo did not write a romance novel but a story of true love.
The plot was well written. The car accident was expected due to the blurb which created a form of suspense to try to figure out how it would happen; and I was grateful that it happened early on to leave the rest of the story without that hanging over my head, as the reader. The author drenches us with Jon's despondency as scenes pass and chances come and are rejected. Jon embraces his pain and wears it as a bitter cloak, shielding himself from relationships and getting hurt repeatedly. However, as the tide turned in the novel, I got to experience the quirky side to the main characters and immediately routed for Samantha and Jonathon. They encountered challenges that they both brought to the relationship but their commitment to each other did not falter. The supporting characters helped to build the characters and helped guide the story to its inevitable conclusion. No scene was wasted as Mr. Vo words wove a scintillating, masterful and inspiring story of love in all its forms.
The characters were fully developed and relatable. I enjoyed the back and forth between the perspectives of Jonathon and supporting characters. The glimpse into the thoughts of the supporting characters added depth to the different scenes. Personalities such as Dean’s became understandable though loathsome and Jeff’s struggle to forgive became palpable and heart-breaking despite our love for Jonathon. Mr. Vo allowed each character the chance to grow on the reader, even as much as Jonathon and Samantha’s stories became ours briefly.
The author’s Christianity added an additional layer to the story that showcased a path to redemption for Jonathon. Through darkness, the teachings of the Bible mentioned gave hope to Jon and helped him to find peace. The religious themes came into play early, starting on page thirty-four in the form of, " I feel as though God had put me on this earth to do one thing: help people like you." Despite being integral to the story, the author did not attempt to indoctrinate but to showcase healing through spirituality.
Overall, I would highly recommend this book as a masterfully written and thoughtfully arranged Christian romance novel. I would rate this book 4 out of 4.
