Review of Why Can't Johnny Just Quit?
Why Can't Johnny Just Quit? is a book that explains addiction. The author, Kyle Oh begins by illustrating to the reader about various misconception and myths concerning addiction. Based on his experience as a physician, the author presents addiction in a manner easier to understand based on facts. He explains that addiction is psychological. It happens when a particular drug rewrites the brain after repeated stimulation of the pleasure spot hence a person cannot do without stimulating that organ. He describes early signs a person should note and study inorder that he may detect if he/she has been addicted by a particular drug. He explains the misconception concerning getting high, the conflict between getting high and true high, and if an individual has being intoxicated by a drug. Addiction comes on how you feel about that drug. People who consume drugs they may not be addicts of that drug. The major disadvantage of drug addiction is that it takes away all the joy you can have when doing daily activities. He explains that the best way to avoid any kind of addiction is getting the right information concerning addiction. Preventing drug addiction is the best solution. He provides solution on how drug addicts can get out of addiction.
By using different styles, the author achieved his scope of illustrating addiction. He educated the reader on various subjects: difference between drug addiction and a drug addict, how to cope with various addiction from drugs, and how to curb drug addiction. He summarized his main points at the end of the book. All resources are listed at the end of each chapter. He used different examples and different cases from different patients he has interacted with. Some of them recovered from drug addiction while others never recovered.
I enjoyed reading the book. He used simple and understandable English. He emphasized the importance of knowing the true meaning of addiction. He writes that addiction should be treated as a disease. The author explains that an individual plays a key role in battling addiction. The use of repetition makes the reader to critically internalize addiction. The reader can carefully follow his narrative because of emphasis.
However, although the book was good, it had some negative aspect. The second part of the book was repetitive. Some sentences were repeated making me bored. Also, the author was too wordy. Some of his views he could have highlighted them so as to save time when the reader reads. The book ended up by discussing alcoholism and opiate addiction making it to out of scope. The topic was addiction and he could have concluded with that.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars . It was well edited. There was no spelling mistake or grammar mistake. His main idea was well developed. He used terms which are easier to comprehend. No profane language was used. I recommend this book to be read by anyone who wants to acquire knowledge concerning drugs and alcohol addiction, people who are battling addiction of whatsoever manner, people who are helping either a friend or a family member who is addicted to drugs, medical practioners who deal with drug addicts, parents who are raising their kids because it has valuable information concerning addiction and anyone doing research concerning addiction.
