[Following is a volunteer review of "My Special Day in Jasper,Texas USA" by Jermaine Kenyatta.]
Imagine what it would feel like to be the only Black child among white children. My Special Day in Jasper, Texas USA by Jermaine Kenyatta is a book about an eleven-year-old Martha who didn't understand why her mom would want her to go to a school where people who had the same skin color as her weren't allowed.
Martha couldn't understand why her mom would be sending her off to a school where only white folks attended. No matter how she tried to question her mom, she had already made up her mind. Her first day at school wasn't an easy one. She couldn't help but notice how people kept staring at her; this made her very uncomfortable. Mrs. Cannon made her feel comfortable at school. Despite the discrimination she received from her classmates in school, she swore never to give up. Her experience, I must say, wasn't an easy one. Would she make it through school?
This author's style of writing made putting this book down a hard decision. To be sincere, I felt that making Martha go to a school she didn't like would affect her. As the saying goes, "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger." I felt touched when she told her mom that no one was on her side, not even her people. You can only imagine how Black people had to cope back in the day. Thank God for the abolishment of the slave trade.
The only thing I didn't like about the book were those pictures. I found it unnecessary, despite it being a children's book. The story was a short and interesting one. There was a lot to learn from this book, even as an adult. I can only imagine what it means to be the first Black kid to attend an elementary school full of whites in Texas.
I'm rating this book 4 out of 4 stars. I found no errors in the book. This shows that it was exceptionally well-edited. I would love to recommend this book to people who love reading children's books.
