Review of Legacy
It is the year 2046. Yes, there are flying cars, yes there are disintegrator rays. And yes, there are aliens—or rather, an alien. His name is David, and he is very polite. There is peace on Earth, but not for long. A man, Nwarht, is dead-set on blasting David’s planet into oblivion. The Earth is nothing but collateral damage to him. Who cares about several billion other people when you can get your revenge, right Nwarht? Wrong. David cares. Why? Read Legacy by Sean T. Smith to find out.
The first nuclear detonation in several years heralds the impending doom. It causes a widespread power failure. As a result, JW Duarte, who was on his way to a very nice date in his very nice flying car, met with a terrible accident. David saves him and regrows his limbs for him. Jessica Bustos is an intelligent and curious woman—and the very nice date. She turns furious when she sees JW helping himself to food at a buffet a day right after he never showed up for their date. One thing leads to another, and JW introduces her to David. Rick and Sarah are on the moon—literally. They used to run Luna Base Alpha but are now stranded 384,400 km away from home as the nuclear detonation also caused power failure on the moon. Director Bustos, Jessica’s father, and director of NRC, along with Major Lucas, a soldier turned the director’s driver, are responsible for investigating the detonation officially. Bryce is just Jessica’s friend who finds himself in the middle of all this—and something more. Legacy follows all these characters as they stumble upon each other and form a motley crew to try and save Mother Earth from turning into a radioactive wasteland. While their very existence is in danger, they also discover their origin. Plus, some supernatural force is at work too. Or is there? And why does this crew predominantly have Jessica’s family and friends involved?
My favorite element in Legacy is Bryce Costa—frat boy-slash happy-go-lucky incarnate. Bryce is shaken to his core when he encounters bizarre things happening to him, including an attempt to murder him. I liked how Bryce’s character does not magically accept the things happening to him. He is disconcerted and worried. He is frightened. These made Bryce feel real because he is very unlike the other characters: researchers, scientists, directors, and aliens. He remains an ordinary man, and it feels as if the author has given the readers a part in the book in the form of Bryce.
I also loved Jessica and Sarah for their strong personalities. The author has explained the various theories like time travel in simple terms, so they were easy to follow. The explanation of human origin by David was more or less a long, one-sided dialogue but, it was not tedious at all—kudos to the author for this. There is nothing that I particularly disliked about this book but, I would have appreciated more explanation of Paul Bustos’ power. Some parts have missing/wrong punctuation and spelling errors, but these do not mess with the fast-paced plot too much.
I rate Legacy 4 out of 4 stars as it was a pleasant blend of science and the supernatural. I did not allow the book a lower rating as the element of suspense was creatively managed by the author—it kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. It is safe to say that Legacy did not bore me at all. The book is full of new ideas about the past and the future that are very intriguing.
I invite readers to give Legacy a try—I assure you that you will love how everything fits together at the end. The book is particularly informative with equally absorbing theories, and the plot keeps getting better and better. Avid readers of science-fiction will thoroughly enjoy this book, and so will others. Just a word of warning: the author has not held back on details so, they may turn gory at times.
