[Following is a volunteer review of "Cynthia and Dan" by Dorothy May Mercer.]
Cynthia and Glenn Patterson are a crack brother-and-sister team of private investigators at their firm, Fairfax Private Investigators. With a job as a personal bodyguard to Senator Mike McBridge, Cynthia sees the damage wrought on the United States of America and her allies first hand. She has devised a plan which she believes will turn the tables in favor of the homeland. All that remains to be sorted out is the pesky matter of her love life. Dan is still very much in the picture, but his attitude towards taking the next logical step in their relationship frustrates Cynthia. Just when she starts thinking of taking a new approach, the mysterious Mr. Eastman enters the picture. Will his charm and charisma aid her grand plan or will it all come crashing down.
Cynthia and Dan by Dorothy May Mercer is an exciting fiction novel. The title does sound a bit too simplistic for me, but the quality of the story makes up for that. All through the book, I got this feeling of flipping between two different books simultaneously. On the one hand, there's a classic romance story, and on the other is an action-themed fiction story. The author does a commendable job of melding both stories into one articulate storyline. However, there are sections where this anomaly stood out like a sore thumb. Going from trying to crack Iranian nuclear codes to reading about morning sickness and pregnancy blues in the same chapter is an example.
On the flip side, the author does put some effort into the editing process. The book is almost error-free and tidy. There is also the very appealing aspect of the "Rated R" warning the author puts up as you get into the heated scene of the book. This is the first time I have come across anything like that in a book, and I have to admit, this is a welcome addition.
Action novel lovers will enjoy this book. It has its moments when you get drawn into the action. Followers of the romance novels genre will also be drawn to this book, as the undeniable tension in the love triangle between Cynthia, Dan, and Sky plays itself out at full steam.
With a simple storyline, an almost-error-free text, and the author's ambitious attempts at creating a full-blown storyline for a secondary character in her previous novels, I can honestly say this book turns out okay in the end. I do not see it pulling up any trees in the library, but it will hold its own in the action genre. Regardless of the minor anomaly in some sections, I rate Cynthia and Dan 4 out of 4 stars.
