Review of Make Me Exist: A Heart-Pounding Sci-Fi Romance (Lost in Time Book 1)
Make Me Exist: Lost In Time Part 1 by Brittany Ziegler is a fantastical romance story with a sci-fi undertone. We follow a patchwork family through tribulations of love, loss, drastic change, and joy. This story had moments I wasn’t expecting, especially within the romance sector, and that was a welcome change in comparison to most other fantastical romances I’ve read. This is a standout book within the category of supernatural romances that isn’t overly flowery, and has just the right amount of action. We witness the main character go through a reverse transformation back to her old self, and back to a life she had forced herself to forget to protect the people she loves.
Overall, I enjoyed the storyline of this book. The main character is strong and steadfast on protecting her family, and has a personality beyond being the victim. She is always putting her daughter first, even if that means going against what her heart wants. There was just enough romantic moments to keep the book mildly steamy, but it isn’t overly sexual. The character and setting descriptions were thorough, and made it easy to create imagery of their beautiful home in my head while reading. I enjoyed the romantic twists, like the love triangle that blossomed in the middle of the book with a character you never would have expected. It was also refreshing to read a story where not everything always turned out to be okay. There were moments of sorrow that kept the storyline grounded, and you began to really form connections with these characters.
While I did enjoy the book, and will most likely read Part 2, there were a few aspects about the writing style that had me frustrated. It felt like there were certain scenes or situations, especially in the fighting/battle moments, that were overly drawn out, as if some of the conversations were filler to the main point. In that sense, the structure felt a little chaotic. The ending didn’t really seem to correlate with the rest of the book in regards to the capabilities of the characters. As being a fantasy-based book, some loopholes are expected, and maybe these instances will be explained in Part 2, but it did leave me a little confused, and made the last chapter a bit hard to follow.
I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The storyline kept me constantly wanting to know what was going to happen next, and I never felt like I could predict the outcomes. The only issue for me really was the overly drawn out scenes and situations. I understand the need for a little suspense, but there were a few instances where it was unnecessary and didn’t contribute positively to the story as a whole.
If you’re looking for a book that’s highly sexually charged with more steamy moments and less fighting/action, this might not be for you. If you like books with love triangles, strong female leads, fantastical baselines, and a handful of intense romantic moments, I recommend reading Make Me Exist. This book is even more appealing if you’re looking for a deeper storyline given it is apart of a series, especially since there’s so much potential in said storyline, and so many teasers into the future of characters you grow to know.
