Review of Cynthia and Dan
The world is plagued with terrorists who derive pleasure in inciting violence. Cynthia takes it upon herself to wage a cyber war against the enemies of America. She does this at whatever cost. Her love life gets in the way, but she is unsure if her lover is her enemy.
Cynthia and Dan by Dorothy May Mercer is a romantic suspense that revolves around fighting terrorists through the internet. Despite the love triangle enmeshed in the book, there is also a deep affection towards victims of terrorism all over the world. This spurs the urge to disrupt the activities of terrorists. This fiction book opens the readers to the possibility of tackling terrorist groups like ISIS once and for all through hacking activities.
One conspicuous advantage of this book is its guide to the readers. It doesn't just allow you to read from A-Z. It gives the reader clues about the setting of a chapter or page. It even forewarns readers of an X-rated page. Few books have the luxury of time to give guides to the readers. This is a plus for Dorothy May Mercer.
The character of Sky is so romantic. Dorothy portrays him as this guy who has a fantastic way with words. The height of it is when he resorts to writing Cynthia letters. Writing letters was just off the chain in the internet and smartphones world. His actions towards the woman of his dreams were also superb.
The book has some pages dedicated to using a contraceptive and a medical abortion drug. This will be very useful to readers in situations that require abortion or avoidance of pregnancy.
The title of this book appeared somewhat ironic because after going through all the pages of the book, there was nothing so special about the connection between Cynthia and Dan. Sky was more in the picture than Dan. I wondered if she wanted to use "Cynthia and Sky" as the title. Alternatively, she could have left an explanation, like how she explained the book's loose ends in her author's notes. Meanwhile, the "author's notes" section was another wonderful thing about the book.
The read was quite pleasing because it brought cyber warfare to another light: safeguarding lives. This gives a typical moral lesson that hacking skills should not only be employed to extort millions from people and banks; they could be used to do positive things. I'd give Cynthia and Dan three out of four stars due to my reservation about the title. The book was well edited, as I only found two errors. I'd recommend this book to computer scientists, as it would resonate with them more. Also, persons intrigued by investigations and romance would find this book exciting.
