Michael Tappenden's The Long Dark Rainbow is a sweet romance novel about an elderly couple Alex and Samantha, who discover a passion and deep love, which they never would have thought would be possible.

It seems that destiny has set the course for there lives as this couple was bound to meet. Their meeting at the charity shop where Samantha works sparks an immediate response in Alex, he remembers Samantha and the attraction he felt for her. She can't seem to get him off her mind. They are both set in their ways and they have, however, encountered life's hurdles along the way over the past 40 years or so. But their chance meeting has awakened new passions and new desires, things that they both thought they would never feel again. Alex often describes the vitality of his youth and now how ashamed he feels that his body fails him as he is an old man.He lives alone and likes it, has become grumpy and morose, whereas Samantha is beautiful and warm and attracts people to her.

The book focuses on the issues they face as a couple, their problems with trying to express their feelings sexually. the problems they have with loss and family. They also learn to appreciate and discover new interests, as well as not encroaching on one another's space. Samantha has to get used to the idea of being with another man after her divorce and Alex has to get used to the idea of sharing himself and his art with someone else.

I really enjoyed the fact that this was an unexpected love story. I will definitely give it a 3 out of 4 star rating as it is a love story that I would recommend especially to women who feel that they are too old to experience romance and adventure.Samatha's character gives us an insight into what an older woman can feel when she is able to let go of the restraints that are self imposed and just allow herself to engage in a new expererience. the novel also expresses their sexual expeiences tastefully, without becoming graphic and sordid. The story was real in the sense that it reflected real problems when it came to treating sexuality honestly, as these are the problems that people face when they get older.

I did however find a few gramatical errors and I found the prologue a bit misleading. It did not seem to tie in with the novel. The prologue sets the reader up to expect more of a thriller and the introduction of the woman on the bed is suggestive. This prolgue definitely kept me wondering what the outcome would would be. I was also unhappy that there were certain aspects of the novel that were left unresolved.
