Review of And Throw Away The Skins
The book And Throw Away the Skins by Scott Archer Jones described a lady called Rebecca. She went by the nickname Bec. In the present, Bec has gone through cancer treatments and is living out the repercussions of being a cancer survivor. She feels insecure about her own body, and she deals with all her issues internally. Bec does not have a perfect relationship with her husband and struggles with connecting with him. She goes through many heartaches, and the book utilizes many flashbacks to inform the reader of her childhood.
I enjoyed the details and imagery when it came to the main character’s emotions. I read up to page four, and I was able to connect personally with the character despite having little to no similarities with her. The characters were well-rounded and realistic. I started rooting for side characters, showing that their personalities were well developed as well. For example, I started rooting for the store owner with a sparkling and straight-up-in-your-business kind of personality.
I did not like the plot. It was slow in the beginning and the ending chapter didn’t feel like it was an ending. It felt like there was more to come. The beginning of the story was a bit confusing since the author decided to start off in a flashback. The flashbacks after the first were smoother, but it was hard to understand the setting of the story at first. I did not like the main character of the story either. Even though she was an understandable character, she was not likable. As a result, I felt impatient while reading the book because I already knew that I did not like her character choices or her way of thinking and there was a good possibility I would end up disliking the path the character takes as a result.
I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars . If I was not reading to review the book, I would not have finished it. I personally did not enjoy reading the book because I knew I would not like the plot direction or the character choices. After a hundred pages, I knew I was going to feel frustrated throughout the book. Furthermore, I read for enjoyment. Because I felt frustrated throughout the book, I did not enjoy reading it. I did not rate this book any lower because it was written very nicely. It drew my attention, and I ended up finishing the book in one sitting. Other people could very well enjoy this book. I did not rate this book any higher because I would not recommend any of my family or friends to read this book.
This book would appeal to adults 18 and older. This book is sad and emotional. It touches on mature topics that perhaps someone who’s gone through cancer or been in the military would like to read. I would recommend teenagers to avoid this book because it includes many topics they would not understand unless they are in the age range where their life experiences could coincide with the books’.
