Pastoring is Not What You Thin by Pastor Elijah Oladimeji is an insightful, honest look at the life of being a pastor for Pastor Job, juggling family and his own church, Church of All Grace. People in the church need him to perform miracles through divine intervention by healing the wounded, the sick, the demons through the simple act of prayer. Even though he helps other strangers, he can’t even provide for his own family or for his church. These are some of the examples Pastor Job’s deep belief in God help him through troubled times. Also, when he is happy or worried he talks to himself, sometimes in his sleep, which his wife hears.

I love this novel because of Pastor Job’s deep belief in God. He believes that whatever happens, God will come through for him. This is an insightful, frank, sometimes funny, novel about life as a pastor. His local community trusts him to offer his opinions on what he thinks about women to men and vice versa. He is like their best friend, yet an authority figure you can trust. My favorite part of the novel is when he helps Sister Anne’s son gets better. Pastor Job’s deep belief in God helps with healing the boy. It is his praying to God to intervene in his illness that heal him that make me believe miracles do exist. I love Pastor Job and Lorraine’s relationship; Oladimeji makes their relationship sounds like any normal husband-wife relationship. She wants a house of their own and a car of their own, not a loaner from the church. She thinks he has mental illness because he talks in his sleep, so she finds his former psychiatrist.

Despite the typos and grammatical errors, this novel shows Pastor Job always shying away from sexual talk. With the men and women who talk about sex with him, he always leaves the conversations before it ends. Oladimeji says Pastor Job has three kids but never does he or his wife converse with them. I understand they are teenagers with teenaged lives, but they should at least be talked about or given dialogue at least once or twice throughout the novel, not just a passing mention. I thought Lorraine and Pastor Job are childless if Lorraine’s mother had not mentioned the kids in conversation.

I rate this novel 3 out 4 because it is funny and insightful. It shows me a whole new world of being a pastor that I never knew existed-a world beyond fellowship. Prayers really does work if you have a deep-set belief in God the Power. Don’t pray for material things; just pray for the essentials: life, love health, happiness and be grateful every day is yours. Don’t take life for granted. Life will come to you. Even when life throws you a curveball, pray and in time, divine intervention will come your way.

Due to religious content and a reference of profanity, I recommend this novel to mature audience. This is a religious book with references of the Bible throughout the book.
