[Following is a volunteer review of "Chasing The Red Queen" by Karen Glista.]
Chasing The Red Queen by Karen Glista is a supernatural story that could be considered a breath of fresh air to the world of vampires, romance, and action. An eighteen-year-old Donja Bellanger is dealing with the common scenario of a teenage girl who lost her father and is forced to move into a new town after her mother decided to remarry. She later forms an unexpectedly close relationship with her new step-sister and is introduced to the glamorous and luxurious world.
The night Donja spends at the nightclub with her step-sister is the night she discovers the whole truth about the world she is living in. There are other creatures living among humans known as Iridescents. From that moment onwards, she finds herself falling for one of the Iridescents and finds out about the family secrets that have her fighting for her dear life.
Glista’s creativity in creating new vampire-like creatures that have slightly different settings to the characters is one of the things that I love about this book, other than the family dynamics. The relationship between the family members and their willingness to protect each other is really heartwarming. Not to mention the marvelous plot and the way it seamlessly unfolds throughout the story is fascinating to read.
Unfortunately, there are a few things that I cannot seem to find the delight in while reading this book. First, is the age difference between Donja and her love interest, Torin Mancini who are eighteen and thirty-five (but had lived for centuries) respectively, and a few other characters' relationships in the book. Second, Torin’s manipulation towards Donja in the beginning of their relationship, specifically on the first date. And lastly, the mentioned of young, underage girls being married in the past.
Considering that this book had a few relationships with a huge age difference, which is a big issue for me and therefore being the reason for the removal of one star, I have chosen to rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Chasing The Red Queen is overall a good read with a number of enjoyable scenes and a lot of admirable characters and relationships.
This book is suitable for a mature audience since it includes an explicit explanation of murder scenes, portrayed erotic scenes, and a few cursed words throughout the story. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about vampires and romance with enough action.
