The Reel Sisters, written by Michelle Cummings, is a heartfelt fictional novel focusing on a small, diverse group of women who all share a deep passion for the fly fishing sport. Despite their unique life experiences, careers, and ages, they form a strong bond, coming together to not only enjoy the act of fly fishing, but also offer each other a comforting lifeline while using the time to unwind and relax. The story follows Sophie, Rose, Veronica, Amanda, and Melody as they navigate success, love, loss, and life.

Often, their trips together aren’t about catching fish, but more about building their friendship. Fly fishing offers the women a wonderful escape, a few precious days to leave behind the mad pace of today’s society. A chance to savour the simple yet satisfying pleasures to be found in the quiet of the wilderness, the water rushing over the rocks, the sound of the line whistling through the air, and the gratifying feeling of catching a fish. Bringing a fish to rise takes patience, dedication, and determination. The women thrive on the challenge of it all.

My favourite part of the book was the diversity of the women. I enjoyed reading each woman’s story from their perspective. I often felt as if I were sitting with each one of them in Rose’s rustic cabin up in the mountains of Colorado, enjoying a glass of wine while listening to them speak. I also loved the way the author described the beauty of the fly casting technique and the intricate details of fly fishing amazed me. An endless array of complexities, hundreds of different flies, and countless knots. It did not take me long to become absorbed in this leisurely-paced story, and I enjoyed the simplicity of the writing. The author knows how to captivate the audience and keep readers intrigued by the characters and their relatable life stories.

I found nothing negative about this book. The author’s message is sincere and empowering. It will take you on a journey of self-discovery as the five women share their secrets, desires, pain, and laughter. The book contains a fair amount of profanity which may not agree with everyone. I only found one grammatical error and therefore feel the book was professionally edited. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.

The Reel Sisters is an informative book that will appeal to fly fishing enthusiasts. I also recommend this book to mature women who value the beauty of genuine friendships and soul sisterhood. You never know when one conversation can change your entire journey. I guarantee you’ll be hooked right from the first page. So, as I take another sip of my wine, here’s to a great novel full of love, laughter, and tight lines.
