Review of Kalayla
Family affairs are complex, and the right thing to do or person to be isn’t always clear-cut. Kalayla by Jeannie Nicholas proves the truth of this statement.
Kalayla Leeroyce is a young eleven-year-old minding her own business in Cambridge. She is a loner, and this could get her in trouble. Foreseeing this, Lena Manero, the landlady of the apartment Kalayla lives in, tries to engage with Kalayla to find something for her to do. Lena quickly finds out that Kalayla has a smart mouth, and she is not shy to use it. Maureen Leeroyce, Kalayla’s mother, is trying hard to keep it together while working multiple jobs and worrying about her daughter. To the shock of all of them, trouble finds Kalayla first, and it springs from home. Too many secrets kept in the dark threaten havoc. What happens when a little light shines on them? Grab your copy to find out.
Kalayla is a captivating novel that revolves around the theme of family. Jeannie is a great writer. The story flows effortlessly. It hooks you in more and more as you keep on flipping the pages. Firstly, she has used simple, easy-to-understand English that is enjoyable to read. Some of it is also poetical. For instance, there’s alliteration in some names like Tammy’s Tips and Creative Creations. I liked the vivid descriptions. The pacing is also good. I love how I found myself reading quickly during the intense moments and slowly when the characters were at ease or simply contemplating. Jeannie used dialogue powerfully to depict character traits.
Character development is superb. The three main characters’ traits are displayed clearly via descriptions of their emotions, actions, and speech. Flashbacks give us some backstory whenever it’s relevant to the story. I loved how it seemed to flow naturally along with current events. There’s a good use of suspense and humor. Another aspect I liked is how the characters seem to be telling you the story one on one. Finally, I commend the editorial team as I did not find any errors in Kalayla.
The only thing I did not find appealing was how often Kalayla Leeroyce emitted profanities. There are erotic and violent scenes in the book. If you cannot stomach these aspects, I recommend skipping this book. Lovers of family-themed books will love Kalayla. I enjoyed reading this book a lot. I, therefore, rate Kalayla 4 out of 4 stars. I hope you enjoy it just as much as I have, or even more.
