[Following is a volunteer review of "Demon Freaks" by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison.]
Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison is a book about four high school friends: Bing Slaughter, Ron Slaughter, Prathamesh Kimitri, and Kaitlyn Krimpsen. Bing and Ron are twin brothers, but they are different in so many ways. Bing is a clever teenager who believes in thorough planning. On the other hand, Ron is a rebellious teenager who always gets himself and his brother in trouble because of his strong influence on his brother. Prathamesh Kimitri, who is popularly known as Meat, is a fun-loving teenager who enjoys drumming. Kaitlyn is a very intelligent girl, but she lacks concentration. Despite their glaring differences, the four friends all desire a normal and fulfilling life, nothing out of the ordinary.
However, one night, the four friends got entangled in a malicious supernatural battle. Will this battle change their lives? Will it alter their perspective on mysticism? Will it alter their future plans? Being non-believers in mysticism, how will they save themselves from this malicious battle?
This book is about friendship, loyalty, self-reflection, and self-discovery. The book is well organised. I love the fact that the twin brothers understand each other's strengths and weaknesses and thus use their strengths to compliment each other's weaknesses. I love the thorough description of the characters' actions. I also love the author's vivid descriptions of the scenery and the atmosphere of every plot in the story. The descriptions made the story seem real and haunting. I especially love the depiction of the Golfers' Association ClubHouse. Whenever I picture it in my mind, it looks isolated and haunted.
I do not like the book's ending. The story looks very much incomplete. The author ended the book so abruptly without concluding some of the events in the story. Thus, the story leaves so many questions and possibilities in the minds of the readers. In my opinion, it is either that this book is yet to be completed or that the author intends to use the unconcluded parts of the story to write another sequel. Either way, I really hope that the author does something about the current ending of the book. I would really love to know how the unfinished events will turn out. I do not like William Jeffrey Brom's character as a teacher. He is too vengeful and verbally abusive to be a teacher. I understand that the man is crafty and power-hungry, but he can at least pretend to be compassionate towards his students. They are teenagers and they are bound to be rebellious, but it is his responsibility as a teacher to help shape them, not disorient them or cause them to lose foresight. I understand that this book is a work of fiction, but considering the fact that Brom's part of the story as a teacher is a real-world scenario, it does not seem practical or realistic to me. Also, I would have loved to see more of Kaitlyn's scenes in the book. I expected her to have some kind of in-born special ability, considering the feeling she had while in the shower at the beginning of the book, the fact that she felt that someone was watching her when the dagger was eavesdropping on their conversations during the car chase at the beginning of the story, and the fact that she kept thinking about three at the same time that Meat was thinking about the number. Apart from the flaws I mentioned above in this paragraph, all the other parts of the story are intriguing. The book contains very few errors. Therefore, I will rate this book at 4 out of 4 stars.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves reading horror books. Like I mentioned earlier, this book encourages self-reflection and we can learn so much from it, like why and how we should appreciate our loved ones and the gift of life. It will also help us to amend our wrong ways. The book also teaches readers about the qualities of true friendship. Hence, I will encourage everyone to read this book.
