Review of Sock Lobsters

[Following is a volunteer review of "Sock Lobsters" by Michelle Bulriss.]
Sock Lobsters by Michelle Bulriss is a heartwarming children’s story that is also illustrated by the author. When a grandmother knits her granddaughter a pair of socks spun from magical red yarn, Sebastian and Lola come to life. Sebastian and Lola are a pair of red socks made to resemble lobsters. Their personalities differ, but both depend on each other despite their polarity. This little story will teach children about the five stages of grief and equip them with tools to help them overcome these issues.
What a charming little story! I really loved seeing the personality the author put into every illustration. Emily and her grandmother were beautifully illustrated, and there were so many cute references and surprises. I especially enjoyed the role Bubbles the cat played in the end. I didn’t see a single editing error or typo in this professionally rendered book, and every page was full of colorful art. The drawings of the sock lobsters were also very cute and expressive, which helped generate the mood of the story and advance the narrative.
I thought it was interesting that the author also incorporated a brief mention of yin and yang. I hadn’t really been expecting that, so I thought it was a brilliant way to help readers differentiate between Sebastian’s and Lola’s personalities. The happy ending was very much appreciated, while also giving parents and mentors tools to discuss topics like despair, grief, depression, and hope in a child-friendly way.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. There’s simply nothing to complain about, in my opinion. The story is succinct, cute, and provides the benefit of making mature topics accessible to children.
If you’re looking for a unique story to share with your kids or classroom, then I recommend you consider this adorable book. It can help children learn about their feelings and give them a grasp on how to master them if plans go awry. You won’t find two cuter socks than Sebastian and Lola. They’ll add a little magic to your dull world.
