Review of Strong Heart
"Strong Heart”. by Charlie Sheldon is an excellent read. It, combines fact and fiction all in one. As a reader I was drawn in by the story line. I couldn’t wait to read the next chapters as the story unfolded. Sarah is a 12-year-old girl with attitude. It is clear that she is transitioning to a young teenager. Sarah’s life became challenging after her mom’s death when she was forced to stay with her step dad. The step dad then moved away leaving Sarah with Ruth her grandmother from her mother’s side. Sarah found it very difficult staying with her grandmother Ruth because of all the rules she had to abide by. As a result, Ruth decided to rather take Sarah to her divorced husband Tom who is Sarah’s grandfather. The grandfather Tom was over 70 years old. Now Tom had been planning to take a trip to visit his grandfather’s grave but with Sarah now in the picture he was considering cancelling the trip. Tom’s friend William and his older daughter Myra persuaded Tom to take Sarah with them on this adventure into the park where she can visit her great, great, great grandfather, Bod-Bob’s grave. Tom agreed to take Sarah along, so Sarah didn’t have much of a choice, but to go with them.
On the trip, Sarah took her sketch pad and sat down by the river where she drew a bear. The bear she drew did not fit in with the other bears in the park. No-one except Myra could believe that she had actually seen such a bear because it lived thousands of years ago and was now extinct. Sarah’s grandfather Tom then decides to reveal to everyone the reason for taking the trip to his grandfather’s grave which is to return an old case containing an old artifact that came into his possession after his grandfather passed away. Tom feels that the artifact belongs in the grave with is grandfather. On reaching the destination they set up camp. Sarah and the case then disappeared this happens after Tom and her have had a strong disagreement. They searched for her for eight days, when she finally re-appeared, she was in a terrible state, thin, muddy, bloody full of cuts on her face and was even missing half a finger.
This book grabbed my attention from beginning to end I found it difficult putting it down. I was on the adventure with Sarah and could feel the magic and losses every step of the way. I wanted to be there with her to learn to use the artifact and experience it all for myself as she did. This book is for people who love adventure, mystery mingled with history, nature, magic and how people grow close to each and grow in themselves. Amazingly written.
I recommend this book to all, from school goers to grandparents those who love to read about the beginning of times and the native Americans, the hardship people had to go through to make this world tame for the rest of us. I give this book a 4 out of 4. because it was such an easy read from beginning to end, the few mistakes in editing in the beginning cannot even lessen my true rating of this book.
I have no negative feedback on this book. Charlie Sheldon has a gift for writing compelling stories that draw you in and capture your attention and I for one am excited to hear that there are two other books follows this one that I can read.
