Set in a magical world that has both elves and centaurs, and other magical creatures, the book, The White Harlequin, by Daphne Tzamali- Yakinthou, brings to light the story of Sugarcandy, also known as the White Harlequin. The usual stroke of time that introduces a new day seems to have missed its count on that fateful day that the starlight disappeared. The starlight disappearance created the sucking of light away from the ever bright city. Sugarcandy, therefore, made a journey to see the Night Sibyl, the custodian of the starlight ring. The snowmen and guardians of the Night Sibyl’s castle announced to Sugarcandy that the starlight had been stolen and that the Night Sibyl refused visitors. A series of events saw Sugarcandy and his friends meet the Night Sibyl, who told them they would travel to a faraway land through the land of the Drakosaurs to retrieve the ring from the Mabia, the living dead fairy. Can Sugarcandy retrieve the stolen starlight ring?

There are a lot of things I loved about the book. The description of the characters was so sweet and magical. The one I most loved was that of the wind maidens. It was as splendorous as befitted the story. For fantasy, the book is perfect, and for a children’s book, it has the best grammar structure, narration, and details that a child would ever love in a storybook. The naming of things was also beautifully done. The Sea of Shadows was a perfect name and well suited to its characteristics in the book. Furthermore, I wonder why Sugarcandy’s ride was a parrot, but the description was amazing. The moral lesson is also sociological. The commitment of the writer and her candid writing style made me enjoy every bit of the book.

I found nothing displeasing in the book. The language of writing was suitable for the author’s target audience. The book is fantastic, and I have no complaints about it. More so, the book was exceptionally well edited.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 because the author’s writing style was both powerful and professional. The use of words was fabulous, and the characterization was magnificent. It is a beautiful book.

I recommend this book to fantasy lovers and children. It would also make suitable reading material for schools that use literature books in teaching academic curriculums.
