[Following is a volunteer review of "Days of Future Found" by M. K. Wark.]
The boot titled Days of the Future Found by Mary Wark, published in 2019, is about earth in the year 2039, when it has been ravaged by changes taking place in the environment. Previously, disasters occurred on earth, which contributed to the climate changes evident during the year 2039, and human beings are so much worried about the changes and what to happen next. This prompts humanity to come up with colonies in specific areas that are more livable.
One of the characters, Ella, lives in such areas where she lives in a climate protected area, which protects her from the ravaged world. When Ella is finally approached by the longevity Institute to take part in a special study, she is very skeptical, thinking that it could be a trap to make her disappear as elders of her age have been disappearing. Going out of the compound, where she has a steady life, to a pace where she does not know what would happen to her is just not something that she takes lightly.
Even though she is also not much impressed with confinement she goes through within the compound, she feels that it is the best place for her to be. Balancing between personal independence and demands of the society, therefore, what Ella, and indeed this society is grappling with. The book clearly depicts a society that is not only fast changing, but one that normally makes us live in situations we would not want.
The compound that Ella lives in, is an indication that a lot should be done in order to help decelerate the ever increasing cases of climate change among other social changes. The novel is set in a projected future where the refinements of technology in the society involve various characters. He book offers the reader the opportunity to understand much about the future and embraces ideas such as climate change and fiction one would encounter in future.
This book, therefore, leaves the reader with the question of what to expect in the next generation, or in future as it is evident that things keep on changing and the people also have to change with it in order to cope with the changes. Even though the book is not like others, which focus more on the heroes, it provides details and specific questions about the changes taking place in the society, and how challenges that are encountered based on such changes.
I would rate this book at 4 out of 4 given the fact that the very important information noted by Wark in the book are realities we already encountering currently. The challenges brought about by climate change is something the society can no longer avid. This book would appeal more to those who have for years believed that climate change is not anything serious. The elderly also need to take precaution given that as more changes are encountered, more of the elderly would be affected as they are shown to be disappearing, which is something the society should give more focus.
