Winners and Losers in Words and Cartoons by Arthur Hartz is a graphic novel about success and failure. The author did a brilliant job of using cartoons and aphorisms to describe and give his point of view on how people attach meaning to who is a success in life and who is a failure, and how society predetermined success or failure. For example, if you are beautiful, rich, intelligent, or born into fame, you are more likely to succeed. But, on the other hand, if you are ugly, obese, poor, or not very bright, you are more likely to be a failure. The point of this graphic novel is to provoke thought and bring to light the many harsh realities of the world.

I loved how the author pointed out that when a celebrity says something that should be common sense or logical, the celebrity is considered profound and meaningful. This graphic novel raises a lot of uncomfortable truths about how we judge and treat people based on genetic traits. For example, the author writes, “Good things come to those who look good.” That statement is mostly true. If you look good, you have the upper hand at being successful. I personally agree with the author’s perspective in this humorous graphic novel and truly loved the artistic style choices of his team.

The only negative is that the author used the Bible and a story about Jacob, which could be offensive. I was not offended by his use of the story about Jacob, but I believe that most people will be quite upset by it. So, I feel I should give a fair warning to anyone before choosing to read this book that your reading enjoyment might be affected by this. Some of the cartoons and aphorisms are easy to understand, and you will quickly see the humor in them and the point the author tries to make. However, a few cartoons and aphorisms are challenging to digest and require more thinking before you understand the author’s message to the readers. But that is also the whole point of his graphic novel, to get the readers thinking a little more about winners and losers and what defines success or failure.

I am rating Winners and Losers in Words and Cartoons 4 out of 4 stars because this graphic novel is well edited, and it is a thought-provoking novel with a sense of humor I appreciated.

I would recommend anyone who enjoys a wry sense of humor to give this graphic novel a read, but once again, I will warn that the Bible is used and could be offensive to readers.
