We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a self-imagined world where magic and multiple dimensions exist in this first installment of the six-book series. It is the story of Galen that arrives from the constant war-torn Land of the Princes to Voulhire, as he inherited his uncle’s blacksmithing shop in the southern town of Magnum Caelum. He is greeted by his uncle’s executor Rowan that tries to help him learn the trade and they travel to find different metals to experiment on as he learns the trade. On their journey, they get hold of a black rock that they don’t know the name of and thus seek out a monk to help with the identification. While he is attempting all this, the small town of Hillport gets a new Lord Eldus that attempts to improve the town and help the people, but it is treacherous work and hindered by two cruel previous Lords. King Wilhelm tries to bring prosperity to the south of his country and Lord Meldorath, a strong mage, awaits his time patiently to escape and take revenge? In the shadows, the Riva Rohavi that have always been intent on destroying the monarchy is building their numbers and awaiting their chance to attack. Where would this new country end up?

The build-up in this book to continue in the next five books is done well and I can see the world the author is creating and the events that can lead to different outcomes. The characters are described interestingly, and the book captures your imagination with all the different elements. The author also put an amazing effort into creating this world and building a history for Voulhire as seen from fables created about King Modius to helping with proper pronunciation of his names and words.

There is some work to be done on the chapters and page numbers, as the book is given 4990 pages but a lot of numbers are skipped and thus the page numbers are not consecutive. The Table of Contents own consists of a cover option and no other chapters, so a reader can’t see the number of the chapter or their names.

I give this book 4 out of 4 stars, as it is written well and the only faults I could find are the chapter layout and faulty page numbers which I don’t feel warrant removing a star. The fictional world is created wonderfully and engaging, so I can see and relate to events happening.

I recommend this book to readers that love fiction and are over 18, as there are violent parts and subtle references to sex. Also, sensitive readers might get upset about the outcome of some of the characters and the cruelty to animals mentioned.
