[Following is a volunteer review of "Roan" by E. R. Barr.]
This Sci-fi book entails a wonderful story, where a young boy embarks on a journey to discover who he truly is with friendships, betray and love. At the age of 17 Conor Archer lived a pretty normal but sad and lonely life with his sickly mother. On the night that would be most painful to him he meets a mysterious and dark man that tells Conor that he is not who he seems to be and should return home where her belongs. Little did Conor know that this dark and mysterious man with other mystical beings would change his life forever and the man that he is now will soon change into something Conor would not recgonize. Conor will soon realise his special gifts and what it all means
Roan by E.R Barr is an exceptional book about Irish legends and folklore that is actually true. Conor Archer goes back to his home town “Tinkers Grove” where he meets Aunt Emily, the Abbot, His 2 best friends Jase and Beth as well as his trusted side kick and gaurdien “Troubles” the dog. Tinkers grove is a quite place between... where humans and other beings called the “dark ones” live together. There is something very old an evil darkness that lurkes in the river and it is up to Conor and his friends to save everyone in Tinkers Grove, but it won’t be easy there will be obsticales that will make Conor and everyone else question his humanity. Roan is a thrilling tale about secrets, mystery, power, greed, love, and pain. Join Conor with his friends and gaudiens to find the secrets behind “Tinkers Grove” and how Conor fits into all of this mysterious yet remarkable place. There is danger, Unforgetable characters, and constant tests of loyalties and friendships.
I love how E.R Barr used the Irish Folklore into his book, it gives the reader a feel of other traditions and knowledge of another world. Barr really portrayed his love for Irish Folklore in this coming of age novel. You could truly feel the emotions of the charachters and see incredible yet awe and sometimes terrifying scenes in which they encounter.
I am giving this gripping young fantasy tale the rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this novel to young adults as this book does have some pretty graphic action scenes as well as light profanities throughout. However, for those who can handle the graphic scenes as well as profanities, this book is a great choice. I think this novel will be most appreciated by fans of the fae.
