[Following is a volunteer review of "Demon Freaks" by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison.]
Demon Freaks is a horror mystery novel by J. R. R. R (Jim) Hardison. In the first chapter, we meet Mr. Brom. He is a history teacher in a high school. He is seemingly excited when he tells his students that their SAT exam is coming up. Bing Slaughter, a student in his history class who seems to have problems focusing in his class, is aware of the importance of this exam.
Soon, we are introduced to Ron, Bing's twin brother. They both disliked Mr. Brom's history class. Bing was surprised that Ron seemed to be seriously taking notes in class. However, Ron was not taking notes. Instead, he was furiously working on his new song. Soon after that, we meet their band, and we are introduced to Meat and Kaitlyn. They agreed to have a rehearsal before studying for their exam the next day. Unexpectedly, something mysterious happens that affects the whole town. Who is behind this mysterious event?
There are so many positive aspects of this book. I enjoyed the author's skillful use of words; it was like he was playing with words. I was impressed from the very first chapter where he said Mr. Brom's chalk “squeaked like a tortured soul.” The author's choice of words when describing the characters or their features was pleasing to read. It added a little bit of imagery and helped me mentally visualize these characters.
I also found the names of the characters amusing. I kept wondering why a person's surname would be Slaughter, Bing Slaughter. That is not even close to his friend, whose name is Meat! I think this was deliberate by the author, and I enjoyed this story more. I would say this book was well written. Often, I could not accurately predict what was going to happen next.
I could not spot a lot of negative aspects. However, I felt the author did not shed much light on Mr. Brom. I would have appreciated a backstory. I had a lot of unanswered questions about him. For instance, I kept wondering why his hair was that way.
I found minimal errors in this book; it was professionally edited. Therefore, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. There was nothing to justify not giving this book a perfect rating. I did not rate it lower because I enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the humor and the fantastic storytelling.
I recommend this book to any reader who enjoys reading thrillers. If you love reading horror mysteries, then this one would blow your mind away. Finally, I would recommend it to readers who love reading books with a touch of crime and suspense. In conclusion, lovers of fiction books would enjoy reading this book.
