Man Mission is a story about a group of 4 guys who learn about navigating ‘real life’ by being ‘real grown-ups’. The author, Eytan Uliel, shares the adventures he and his friends, Sam, Alec, and Daniel, undertook as a part of their ‘annual Man Mission trips’.

The main character always had the idea of going on an annual outdoor activity trip. Lo-and-behold, Sam and our main character go on an impromptu hiking trip to New Zealand, and thus, the first Man Mission trip was born. This annual tradition continued for fifteen years, and in those 15 years, the men of the group transitioned from their young age into adulthood. They saw it all: work-life balance issues, marital highs and lows, financial issues, establishing their own families, health issues, grief, loss, smiles, the importance of friendship, the value of mental health, and finally, lots of crazy adventures. As the story unfolds, they learn what being ‘a real man’ is all about.

I am not sure which part of this book is fiction and which part is nonfiction since the author has the great ability to seamlessly blend both spaces. The characters’ personal lives were intriguing and captivating, but their travel experiences were even more fascinating. This is a part travelogue and part memoir. I have read many travelogues, but this is by far the best book I have read in this genre. That’s why I will rate this book four out of four stars.

The main hook point of this book is that the story is told through the first-person POV of the main character; we get inside his head and see the story through his eyes. We see the life aspects through a man’s POV. We empathize as the characters struggle with being ‘real men'. We feel their sadness and happiness; we see what goes on in the mind of men; we see what guy friends talk about in real life; we see how they nurture their relationships; we feel their inner feelings and desires. This new perspective is something I have seen rarely in books. For this fresh attempt, this book deserves a perfect rating.

The editing is professional, and I did not find any errors. The characters are real, and the story is extraordinary. The writing is excellent and will hold the reader’s attention. If the author decides to write fiction or fantasy, I will forever buy his books. The ‘injuries sustained’ category was my favorite part of this book. All in all, I have no negative points about this book.

There is a moderate amount of profanity. So, please be aware of that. Some of the choices made by the characters might not appeal to everyone. But in the end, they are human; it is a part of growing up. The author has not cherry-picked the story, and I commend him for his honesty. I will recommend this book to readers who enjoy travelogues and memoirs. Readers who want to gain a perspective on life from a man’s POV can also pick this book. Readers who are curious to go behind the screen and see what guy friends are like in real life will immensely enjoy this book. Happy reading.

My favorite thing is when authors are able to properly blend together elements of fiction and non fiction to seamlessly make them fit well together. Thanks for writing this review, it sounds pretty interesting
