Terms of Service written by Craig W. Stanfill is a fictional story set in a dystopian future that hints towards a future of our making, giving the reader pause to consider the technologies, and its impact in the lives we lead. Our protagonist, Kim, a “Prettie”, is a smart, conforming individual who longs to work with the elusive Artificial Intelligence Bots. Unfortunately, she is stuck working with the automatons, doing repetitive tasks, that does nothing to break the monotony of the life she leads. Until one day, her mundane life takes on a new and exciting path where she uncovers truths that change everything. From work to home life, personal identity to social standing, she has to make decisions that keep her in good standing with the ever present AI units and avoid breaking their Terms of Service. This story is similar to some of the popular dystopian films today, but has a unique twist, which center around the dangers of totalitarian government. Conforming is not an option, it is a requirement. Well planned conditioning through everyday interactions with technology, blind the people of this society to the truth.

If you have an interest in the field of Artificial Intelligence, this book is for you. Dr. Craig Stanfill, who carries a PhD in Artificial Intelligence, has written an easy to follow piece for the general reader, but still obviously written by an expert in the field. Dr. Stanfill’s dystopian world that he has created has a depth of detail that puts you right into the story. With just the right amount of imagery, and technical explanation, you could immerse yourself in the story as if you were truly in a VR setting. Virtual control is so intertwined in this fictional society that you will wonder where reality begins and ends.

To clean up some points, the ending does seem a little rushed. I was very intrigued as to how the story would conclude, but it abruptly ended. Readers will definitely still want to read the next book in the series, but I would have enjoyed just a little bit more to the resolution.

This book was well written, with only two noticeable errors towards the beginning of the story, but does seem to be professionally edited. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this to young adults ranging from their late teens to adults for its sexual content, and drug related scenes.
