[Following is a volunteer review of "Backcomb & Tattoo" by Shea R Embry.]
Aunt Mary Opal, Rachael, Jesi, and Nicole are four friends who met by happenstance and come from quite diverse backgrounds. Those friends have a lot in common, one of which is that they are women with a lot of responsibilities and challenges that they must deal with in order to grow and thrive. Being friends was one of the aspects that guided them through their individual life journeys and also allowed them to have their own adventure together, which was full of secrets and Jack Daniels. Not to mention the pleasure of having someone with whom you can discuss practically anything and be yourself.
In Backcomb & Tattoo, Aunt Mary Opal, who is older than the rest of her friends, tries her best to be her best self and to not show her friends how weak she is becoming by trying to enjoy her time and be there for them. Aunt Mary Opal's friends were very attached to her because of how welcoming and nice she was. However, for one reason or another, she started having secrets and hiding things from them, which wasn't a pleasurable thing to do, nor was it easy.
Aunt Mary's personality was well represented by the writer, to the point that I felt attached to her and aspired to having an elderly friend like her who would be open and nonjudgmental. The writer also always found wonderful ways to convey how linked the friends were and how their experiences brought them closer rather than ripping them apart, demonstrating the value of strong friendships. I liked how each event had a hidden lesson for everyone and had made everyone develop in some way, which contributed to the value of being in a really good friendship.
The novel is divided into 41 chapters. Each one was perfectly related to the one following it, which truly helped me not lose interest and seek to read more without thinking about quitting at all. Shea R Embry did an excellent job of not just explaining the friends' connection, but also their adventures and how each of them felt towards certain things. I also like how the author made everything so clear, which means you won't need a map to read the novel, you won't get lost at any point, and you'll be able to connect the dots as soon as they're presented. It highlights the good work and increases its value.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because having a novel that can speak to you and show you how important it is to be in a healthy relationship and have good friends and can really communicate this message to you via the novel itself is something that not just any writer can achieve. It demonstrates how much effort the writers expended to make the novel valuable. Not to mention that the book has been thoroughly edited, as I saw no grammatical errors while reading.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what it's like to have a good connection with people who you care about and how it connects you not just with them but also with your own feelings and aspirations in life. This book will walk you through it and provide some light on areas you may believe are vital to focus on in any relationship or friendship.
