Boone Daniels is set to compete against his best friend, Flynn Michaels, defending his unbeaten four year title, in a jousting tournament. In a rather unfortunate turn of events, Boone ends up seriously injuring Flynn. Being a very talented musician, Boone promises Flynn to travel to New York, to play the concert of a lifetime with Flynn’s band, at a music festival. Despite having never been out of his hometown Wentzville, Boone travels to New York.
In a rather bizarre turn of events, he meets a talented violinist named, Sapphire Anjou.
Their destinies seem intertwined as they bump into each other at just the pivotal moment in time and end up fleeing from armed murderers together throughout the city. They soon learn that there is more to the up-and-coming music festival than just the music.

Using the help of a very friendly magical taxi cab service, they travel through the city to secret societies in a race to stop an evil immortal man from using the hidden music of classic componist, Niccolo Paganini, to summon the devil and destroy New York.
All is not as it seems. As the story unfolds, the plot gets twisted and turned at every corner. More and more characters, each with their own goal are introduced. Haunted by his past and tormented by a curse, Boone must fight and flee at every corner and turn, with Sapphire right by his side. He must keep her safe as they search for Paganini's compositions together. Will they make it to the festival in time, to play their parts?

In his novel, The Devil Pulls the Strings, J. W. Zarek combines magic and time travel, together with the most beautiful descriptions of music. The main character's rare condition, which enables him to smell or taste different sounds, makes it seem like he was destined to be there. Very detailed descriptions of events, filled with excitement and anticipation, captures the reader’s imagination and makes this book hard to put down.

There is nothing to dislike about this book, which is very well edited. I didn’t find any spelling or grammar errors and strongly feel that this book is well-deserved of a 4 out of 4 stars rating.
The author writes with great passion and intrigue, which is felt all throughout the story. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

This book is best suited for the non-religious reader who appreciates fantasy and folklore characters, magic, and time travel.
