In the beginning of Hattie Vavaseur by M.Rebecca Wildsmith, the reader witnesses Hattie attending a funeral. She is subsequently chauffeured to what appears to be a rather large and somewhat neglected manor house. Ushered inside, still in a state of confusion, a butler escorts her upstairs to her allotted bedchamber. Being decidedly sleepy, Hattie acquiesces and settles in her curious surroundings, committing to exploring further the next day.

On waking, her surroundings and the few people she converses with, suggest an air of familiarity whilst retaining an air of mystery. Still, the nagging question remains, whose residence is she currently staying in?
As Hattie’s consternation increases, she attends a rendezvous in the nearby village and thus ensues the most unsettling discovery of her life. It is on this occasion she encounters Vamelda, a larger-than-life spiritual medium, complete with her fascinating curios and crystal orb. As Hattie is speculating if her circumstances can deteriorate further, Vamelda releases a bombshell - Hattie is dead! Can Hattie accept her current situation? How did she die? And who is the ‘master’? Read the book to discover more!

Hattie Vavaseur has it all, a delightful combination of historical romance and thrilling comedy. From the beginning of the novel, warning signs alerted me as to what could develop. Wildsmith has created one of those reads that gnaws at you, eats you up, and spits you out at the finish. Just when I believed I had grasped the situation, another incident occurred and flipped my previous conclusions on their head. Continuing through the book, all that mattered was reaching the end and the concise answers to my questions.

Hattie, as the female protagonist, is my favourite character. I imagined her perfectly, both outwardly and inwardly, such is her brilliantly descriptive character detail. Wildsmith has an astute sense for a plot, interpretation and creating suspense. With a chronology that actively engages the reader in solving the mystery, trying to assemble the narrative threads, it produces a satisfying answer to primary questions such as who, why, and what?

I have no negative comments to mention concerning this read. The story flows at a smooth pace with cleverly penned wit. In my opinion, the novel seems professionally edited as I found few errors. The book contains no inappropriate language or any religious references. I recommend this novel to most readers, especially fans of the supernatural, cosy mysteries, and thrillers. An entertaining mystery novel complete with a heart-tugging romance.
I rate Hattie Vavaseur 4 out of 4 stars.
