[Following is a volunteer review of "Winners and Losers in Words and Cartoons" by Arthur Hartz.]
Winners and Losers in Words and Cartoons by Arthur Hartz Graphic Novels and Comics is a witty satirical collection of the best of the worst. A wonderful collection of hard-hitting humor. A beautiful illustration of the misconceptions we lull ourselves to while chasing wins that are, essentially, null and void to the well-being of the heart and soul. An ugly truth delivered under the safe guise of humor and satire.
This collection is filled with positive aspects. The most captivating thing in this book is the artistic talent and skill that is delivered in a succinct and powerful manner. The various messages of the book are absolutely striking. The title of the book beautifully complements and clarifies the content within it. The absence of compassion, humanity, and hope for a better interpersonally connected future is illustrated to a T. The disruption and disturbance of hope for inner peace as society relentlessly pursues a better self comes through in a way that shakes my perceptions of the world. The use of imagery is relevant and captivating in support of the message the book aims to deliver, all with that powerful sting of truth behind it. The dangers and pitfalls of society’s cultural and normative idealization of winning and the gain of material goods is abundantly clear. The messages of the book are ineffably valuable: the manner in which the collection paints the downside to the misconstruing of luck and pure chance as a skill; how intellect and beauty are no longer characteristics, but rather necessary accessories; how high the price we pay for biological attributes is as opposed to the true value of character; the misguided mass interpretations of evolutionary qualities in opposition to us wasting them on trivialities; the void of meaning in society’s definition of success; the exploitation and trampling of other in said pursuit of success; the utter negation of humility. This collection challenged my view of the world, my idea of success, and my hope for self-improvement.
I did not find any negative aspects to this little book. I just need to add that some of its content may be offensive, but again, it is a satirical piece.
I hereby rate Winners and Losers in Words and Cartoons by Arthur Hartz Graphic Novels and Comics a full four out of four stars. The editing of this piece was perfectly executed and handled with no identified errors. As for the cartoon illustrations, they are perfectly suited to carry the message that they mean to deliver. The clarity of an unpleasant truth is delivered with great artistic skill and intellect.
I would recommend this book to those open to the ideal of self-enlightenment and self-improvement. The collection is suitable for ages seventeen and up. There are some profanities present in the pages, noting dire, hence, parental guidance is advised for younger readers.
