[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first installment in the We are Voulhire series. It is set in the mythical kingdom of Voulhire, a realm of mystery, magic, and remarkable culture divided into provinces, as shown on the map at the beginning of the book.
The story covers a lot of characters, with the main protagonist being Galen Bray, born and bred in the Land of the Princes, who is seen fleeing his homeland at the inception of the story for greener pastures. He arrives at Voulhire to claim an inheritance left to him by his great uncle, and in doing so, he encounters the boisterous executor, Rowan, a womanizer, and a carefree fellow. Together, they find themselves on an adventure. Other characters include Lord Eldus Alderman, the newly appointed lord of Hillport, who arrives at Hillport with the hope of improving the lives of its inhabitants. There are also narratives from Wilhelm, the king of Voulhire, Midius Maido, and others, all narrated from the omniscient view, except in the case of the main protagonist, in whose case the first-person narrative is used.
The first thing I noticed about this book was the title. I found it very catchy and captivating. The author also did a very good job with the introduction; it was simple but promising, and it kept me hooked on the next page. Also, reading about the kingdom of Voulhire, the descriptions given plus the map provided at the beginning made it look so real. The magic, the different cultures discussed, the existence of a parallel universe. I just loved every bit of it. The plot of the book was well thought out; nothing seemed out of place. The vocabulary was top-notch. I'd have to commend the author on that.
There wasn't anything to dislike. The author understood the assignment well. From the plot to the setting and characterization, it was all well thought out. However, as much as I liked the title, I did not fancy the book's cover as it failed to depict the high quality of the book and instead looked uninteresting. I just wish I had read more about Meldorath. I found his character very interesting.
I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. The work was exceptionally well-edited, as I did not encounter any errors in the course of my reading. I recommend this book to all adventure lovers like myself, and also those interested in parallel universes.
