[Following is a volunteer review of "Seeing with Fresh Eyes" by John W. Bullock.]
"Seeing is a lot harder than looking. We all look at things every day but fail to see them. The truth is that we generally only see what we want to see or what we have been trained to see." A saying in the book that captures the whole context of the book. The author, John W.Bullock relates this to the concepts of sin, Salvation, and the steadfast love of God.
Seeing with Fresh Eyes by John W. Bullock is a book in which the author shares his perspective on sin and the love God has for us."Some time ago I realized that although I had grown up in a Bible-believing church, I didn’t understand the gospel." John W. Bullock says at the start of the book. Through his curiosity, he ends up having a relationship with God not just by his name, and shares his knowledge through writing. Through biblical references, he challenges one's understanding of the Bible. He uses Adam and Eve, Nicodemus, Jesus, and the Israelites as examples to bring greater understanding. The author goes as far as to explain the two kingdoms: the kingdom of self and God's kingdom. It also guides on discipleship. What does sin mean? What does it take for salvation to take place? Read the book to find out.
I love how the author isn't quoting his words but includes scriptures as support. He includes different references which show that he researched everything. He uses New King James Version(NKJV), Amplified Bible(amp) and Amplified Bible Classic Edition(ampCE).
I love how the author challenges one's way of thinking. He writes about how we think of God and who He is. "For God justice means to set things right to restore things to how He meant for them to be. He continually calls us back to him." The author writes, "While we believe justice means retribution and punishment. Driven by both jealousy and inadequacy we trying vainly to 'make things even.'" He also gives a perspective on how humankind lost its clear vision of God, it depended on what it believed God should be like. This is because having a relationship like Abraham, Moses or David seemed out of reach.
One may question some of the things said in the book which the author encourages it. Through this curiosity and questions is when one grows spiritually. Reading this book sparks enough curiosity to enable one to carry out their research to get answers. At the start of the book, different reviews are given by people from different ministries who agree with the book's context. He also provides endnotes that enable one to be able to conduct further research. At the start of every chapter, the writer forebodes by giving key points that relate to what each chapter talks about. He also includes a verse that also backs up the key point on what to expect.
Reading this book requires one to be open-minded. There was nothing I disliked about this book. I would rate it 4 out of 4 stars due to how interesting it was to read. I would recommend it to Christians but also to those that may be curious in regards to sin, Salvation and God's love.
