Demon freaks is a fictional book by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison. It has cults, sacrifices, rituals, teenagers, magic powers, secret organizations, the dread of having to choose a career, the S.A.T.s and a boatload of delightful characters.

The plot is nonsense. Beautiful, fun, exhilarating nonsense. What do you do when your history teacher turns out to be a part of a secret evil cult and tries to kill you the night before your S.A.T.s? Never mind the fact that he is in possession of a dagger that can possess people. It is incredible how the author has managed to ground it in reality, with the golfers being an evil cult when there's already another evil cult. Not to mention the sarcastic, possessive, grumpy dagger. Insane, I loved it.

The characters are well written and relatable. An effort is made to show the differences between the Slaughter twins, and they bounce off of each other well. The combination of Kaitlyn and Meat is incredibly hilarious. We are told that the four of them are close friends, and it shows. Although, Grunther takes the award of being the most intriguing and weird character in the book without competition.

My favourite part was how candid the characters were with their emotions. It is not overly dramatized, and they are not all screaming and scared all of the time. Their developmental arcs are not disrupted by the comedic tone of the book. This consistency made it an even better experience.

The writing style is incredible. Funny, descriptive, simple, and seamless, all in one package. I actually felt like I was there and could see each of the events as they happened in my mind's eye. The book flowed smoothly because of this, and the chapters helped break down the book in an efficient manner, with almost every single one ending on a cliff-hanger.

In some places, the book felt a little janky in the way that it was stitched together, but it did not detract from my experience. At some points, the author does get stuck on one point for a bit too long, but the pacing is otherwise consistent.

If you like books that are fast-paced, silly, and with a wry sense of humour, I recommend this book. It is exceptionally well-edited. If you have a problem with gore or graphic descriptions, I would recommend not reading it.

It reads like a fever dream, and I enjoyed myself thoroughly. I rate it 4 out of 4 stars.
