Review of The Devil Pulls the Strings
[Following is a volunteer review of "The Devil Pulls the Strings" by J. W. Zarek.]
The Devil Pulls the Strings by J.W. Zarek is a fantasy novel that centres around the life of Boone Daniels, a small-town Missouri musician, who lives in a trailer park with his aunt and cousin in Wentzville. His life experiences an unexpected adventurous transformation when he accidentally stabs his friend, Flynn Michaels, during the joust at St. Louis Renaissance Festival. Boone feels obligated to his friend and promises to stand in for him at his band's latest gig in New York City. On the quest of fulfilling his promise in New York City, Boone shockingly finds Professor Stone, whom Flynn asked him to meet, dead, on the sidewalk of his house. Through the fatal incident, he meets Sapphire Anjou, a young french female violinist. Professor Stone's death causes an entanglement for Boone and Sapphire and while they both try to find out the reason for his death, they battle several enemies and uncover ancient societies hunting for Paganini's rare music sheets to summon the devil. As fate would have it, Boone is forced to face his greatest fear, take on endangering responsibilities while he tries to fulfil his promise to Flynn, and save his new friends and the city.
I, to a great extent, enjoyed reading this book and it is a perfect blend of fantasy, adventure, action and science fiction. I love the way J.W. Zarek expressively used rich vocabulary, to give a detailed description of action scenes and how characters feel, especially when Boone finds himself in deadly situations. This pushes me to visualise and conveniently utilise my imagination.
I felt no disapproval towards any part or the entirety of this book. The storyline is well structured and the plot twist wasn't confusing. I was enchanted and captivated by the storyline from the beginning of the book till the end. This book is one of the most interesting fantasy books I've read so far.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. J.W. Zarek did put a lot of carefulness into his writing to achieve a professionally edited work. Zarek beautifully utilised essential elements that make fantasy books interesting to read such as mystical characters, imagery, and suspense, in this piece.
I recommend this book to readers who enjoy adventure, and science fiction, and love to fantasise. It excludes sexual or erotic scenes which makes it appropriate for readers of any age group.
