Matthew Tysz’s We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is an intricate web of worlds with mages, humans, and creatures of other worlds. We follow the lives of Galan, Eldus, and Midius. Galan, a young man from the Island of Princes with a yearning to learn the new world around him; Lord Eldus, a humble man of honor who has just been appointed lord of Hillport; Midius, the first knight of Voulhire, also known as Mianora, who is headstrong in wanting nothing but pleasure from both sexual acts as well as watching others suffer. While each of these characters are on separate ends of the country, their paths soon weave together in a stunning stream of events of passion, desire, deceit, magic, and a dedication to protect what is theirs. The infamous Lord Meldorath is rumored to be dead, but there are strange happenings going on in the small town of Hillport that cannot be explained. Between soldiers being tricked into leaving their posts and the innocent being mentally abused by images of death and fear itself. In the land of the Mianora, they suspect the Riva Rohavi are planning a miraculous come back to finally take full control of all those not like them and claim all lands. Are these events in any way tied to each other? Is the rumor Meldorath’s death just that? If so, is he acting alone, or is there a traitor among the peaceful cities?

At first the story read as a preteen narrative. Further along, especially once Midius is introduced, I came to realize this is more of a young adult quick read. We Are Voulhire gives the young adult a breath of fresh air from reality, while also tying in life struggles that may be easily relatable. With the uncommon presence of magic and the more common occurrence of deciding who you want to be, what you’re meant to be, and whether your beliefs are your own or your family’s, young adults will certainly grasp onto each character and find some resemblance and remained attached until the last page.

I found this novel intriguing and one of its kind. When I first read that there was going to mages and mystical creatures I thought “oh great, another Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings spin off”, but I was far off. Tysz has done a spectacular job of creating his own world. Unlike the other stories, there is no hero. While there is a main villain, or two, there is no one sought out character to relieve all of destruction and ruin. Instead, each person has his own predicaments they must face, whether it’s alone or with the accompaniment of others.

I rate We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies 4 out of 4. Tysz is a profound writer and story teller. His veracity of life’s qualms and desires allows his readers to dive into his story and get lost in his world of make believe that is all too relevant to our own.
