[Following is a volunteer review of "Pulse: Book One" by B.A. Bellec.]
B.A. Bellec's Pulse is a dystopian horror thriller set in 2040 told from many points of view. The book presents the story of a large business monopolizing the tech industry, politics, and a large music festival called Pulse Fest as the primary event. What wasn't expected was the horror that was about to unfold with an unknown beast hungry for human flesh. Although this book is set in a dystopia era, the problem addressed such as a pandemic, climate change, bribery, corruption infringement of information by tech companies and greed makes it seem not far away and gives an obscured visualisation of what our future might be. This book's themes include technology, climate change, activism, capitalism, commerce, and pandemics.
Pulse Fest was developed by Pulse, a large tech organization that has complete control over everyone and is the Godfather of technology. It created the Pulse fest to improve their company's image — to the general public — and growth but had no idea about the terror beneath the earth at the festival site and what was going to happen. The tale featured multiple points of view.
This novel excels at creating anticipation for what comes next. Because of the explicit information, it piques your interest. Even though there were a lot of characters at the start of the book, the varied points of view allowed you to learn just enough about them, and even though everyone had a separate tale, it all came together in the end. The screenplay structure adopted in the book offers this book a sense of uniqueness in that it does not feel like anything I've read before or appear to be a play. The author also incorporated quotes and made references to real-life occurrences in the book, which was both enjoyable and disturbing.
This book was so interesting and captured my interest from the first chapter which is why I cannot find anything negative to say about it. It is the best horror book I've ever read and I applaud the author, B.A Bellec.
I rate this book a four out of four stars because of how well written it was and the character development, it is an unforgettable book and I would definitely read this again. Pulse is not my preferred genre because of the horror involved but I couldn't tear my eyes away. This book was also carefully edited, since I found no errors or typos. This book is for anyone who enjoys thrillers, dystopian times with a touch of terror, or for anyone who preferred literature written in movie-like scenes.
