[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a story set in the fictional kingdom of Voulhire. Voulhire is ruled by a king. It has several cities that are governed by lords who report to the king. The kingdom is full of magic, with several people, referred to as mages in the book, wielding the superpower. There is one mage called Meldorath, who has mastered magic and can use it in ways not conceived possible before. He is so powerful that the king, Wilhelm, deems him a threat to his reign. Even after conferring lordship on him, King Wilhelm cannot fully trust him. He hatches a plot to eradicate him from the face of his kingdom. It becomes ‘known’ that Meldorath is dead. Matters implode later in the plot as there is talk of another threat to the kingdom of Voulhire, the Riva Rohavi, which is a sect that was believed to have gone extinct, resurfacing.
On the other hand, Galen has been poor all his life. He has recently come across a great fortune that was left to him by his deceased uncle whom he never met. The cities of Voulhire are unfamiliar to him. He tasks his uncle’s executor with helping him to get around and set things in order in his uncle’s estate. In addition to this, he has to learn how to be a blacksmith as that was his uncle’s trade. Rowan, his uncle’s executor, helps him find metals more precious than basic steel so that he can get into business after learning this new skill.
One thing that I like about the book is the author’s ability to create a fictional world and make it seem as realistic as it can be. I enjoyed being in this world. Tysz’s story-telling skills kept me engaged throughout the whole plot. I was creating pictures in my mind as I read the book, especially in the parts where there was war and in instances where the use of magic was employed.
There is nothing that I do not like about the book. The author did well to let us into his world of Voulhire. I also did not find any errors in the book. It was exceptionally well-edited.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. In addition to the stellar editing, it was beautiful to see this imaginative world. The addition of magic made it even more interesting for me. The book is a very enjoyable read. I would recommend it to anyone.
