Review of Man Mission

[Following is a volunteer review of "Man Mission" by Eytan Uliel.]
Man Mission is centered on one man's life story and his adventurous trips around the world. While in college, the main character dreams of being able to explore the globe and immerse himself in different cultures. That dream comes to pass when he's propositioned by his friend Sam, for a hiking trip in New Zealand. Thus Man Mission is born, an annual tradition that expands later to include two other friends. These four men may have normal lives and boring jobs, but once a year they take an extraordinary yet dangerous trip that serves as a respite from the constant burdens they face each day.
I found this novel thoroughly entertaining and I liked the little previews at the beginning of each chapter. At its surface, the book seemed to be a travel log transporting us accross the world from one exotic land to another. The destinations were described vividly and the sights, painted in our minds. I experienced different cultures through their eyes, and enjoyed the thrills in each trip. Yet, the story was so much deeper than that. Eytan Uliel was able to perfectly express the worries and challenges these men faced. The 'Man Mission' served as an escape from mundane lives and boring jobs, and also helped to ease their hearts. I really liked the snippets of humour infused in the story but most especially, I loved the insights into the protagonist's life. Through 15 Man Missions, we see his inner turmoil, his failures and eventual growth. His life and its challenges were very relatable, and he really is a fantastically well grounded character. I love that he was able to own up to his mistakes and finally find happiness. I found it insightful because I was able to learn a few things about how men think and the invisible burdens they face.
The only trouble I had with the book were some of the interactions between the main character and his friends. For example, I couldn't understand Sam's reaction to the protagonist's injury, as he literally left him to crawl on the floor. Also, I found the incident at the park to be really disrespectful to their wives.
I'd rate this novel 4 out of 4 stars as it was humorous yet surprisingly touching. I liked the protagonist and found the ending of his story to be perfect. I also found no errors while reading.
I would gladly recommend this book to readers who like globe trotting adventures.
