[Following is a volunteer review of "Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday Living (Trad. Chinese Edition)" by Peter Liptak.]

In Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday Living (Trad. Chinese Edition), Peter Liptak played two roles. The first is that of a curator. In this book, he curated over 300 North American idioms that people who read Chinese but want to learn English or North American idioms will find beneficial. His second role is that of a teacher. It showed this when he simplified the whole thing to ensure maximum retention and understanding.

So, Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday Living (Trad. Chinese Edition) is a book of idioms that teaches its readers some of the most popular idioms in North America. Each expression falls into a category. Each category (for example, morning, evening, outing, etc.) has a chapter dedicated to it. Pictures were also used to give graphic illustrations or explanations of some of these idioms. Lastly, questions that demanded answers were asked at the end of each chapter.

If I list every positive thing I saw in this book, this review would be more than 6000 words long. I will mention some of the good or positive things in the book. The first positive feature I saw was its simplicity. Peter Liptak wrote this book in a way that brought back memories of my books in primary school. There are no big words or confusing phrases in it. Each idiom was explained in clear, simple English.

Another thing I like is the exercises. This is a no-brainer for most of you reading this. I’m sure that you will love them too. Lastly, what I loved the most is the fact that I found this book useful to me. I speak English, but it will surprise you that I was clueless about the existence of some of the idioms in this book before now. I liked that I learned a lot from it. That is my favorite and most loved positive feature in the book.

I have no negative points to outline in this book. I just do not. I saw this whole manual (and I chose to call it a manual for idioms) as perfect. I did not hate anything about it. That is one of the main reasons I am rating this book 4 out of 4. It taught me a lot. I believe that it will teach both English and Chinese readers and speakers a lot more than I learned. It was not just professionally edited. It was edited excellently. I recommend it to anybody who wants to learn about some of the most popular idioms in North America. I think that this manual is good for Chinese people who know the basics of the English language. Even though this will aid in learning the language extraordinarily fast, it will not give you the lessons that a newbie needs that will help them read and understand this book. That is the truth.

You are right. This is a manual that I think every ESL learner from the intermediate level upwards should have. I even discovered that there are a lot of idioms that I knew nothing about. Idiom Attack is really an eyeopener. Thanks for this indepth reviews.

When I was in college I had friends from different countries who had trouble understanding Americans. This would have been very useful for them.

I just finished reading this book. Let me just say that I think this is pure gold for anyone that is interested in learning the English language. Of course, I do not think that beginners will find this useful or of much help. It is best suited for people who have mastered the language to a significant degree.

Idiom Attack is one of the best books on idioms I have seen so far. I don't say this because I want to cone off as patronizing. It's just sad that it has just a little over 300 idioms in it. Well I take solace in the fact that this is just the first volume. I will be one of the first to get the second volume when it comes out.
