Review of Butterfly Awakens
Do you think you can predict when something bad will happen? When someone you love, starts acting differently, calling when they know you can’t answer, do you get worried? Meg was in court when her mother called, not being able to answer or call her back, Meg started to worry about what her mother had to say. That call changed everything, and Meg knew, that the moment she saw the missed call, something was wrong.
Butterfly Awakens by Meg Nocero is an amazing memoir of transformation through grief. Nocero tells her story of transformation and the struggles she had to face to experience that transformation and become the strong person she is today. Meg Nocero is a federal immigration prosecutor who has been struggling her whole life.
Being bullied as a child, Meg had to learn how to appreciate herself, the problem is: that everything Meg has done and has learned has been with the help of her mother. So, when her mother dies, how will Meg be able to do anything and become a functioning lawyer, wife, mother, and person? Meg is working, she’s at court when she gets a call from her mother to inform her that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. This hits meg as a shock. When Mary Jo, Meg’s mother ultimately dies, her whole family is devasted, but Meg starts getting panic attacks and gets depressed. At her own pace, Meg finally begins to look for ways to heal and move on. Will she be able to do it?
The book is divided into three parts. Part One: Grief – Trust the Process? this part talks about grief, Mary Jo’s death, and how hard it hit Meg. Part Two: Transformation – Metamorphosis through the Darkness talks about transformation, the paths Meg followed into recovery, and the people she met that helped her get there. Part Three: Free – A Leap of Faith to Fly! talks about being free and enjoying life.
Meg Nocero’s writing style is amazing. I love how every chapter is amazingly explained, she takes time clarifying every term and phrase used during the book, why this person or this activity meant too much to her, and how it helped her become this new person. Every chapter begins with a quote, and I love that, I love when an author shares something inspiring with the reader. I also love how she feels about the way the universe’s vibrations help us to meet the right people at the right time, we always find the people we need to find in order to feel better.
I lost my father when I was just four years old, so I cannot understand what losing a parent that has been your pillar, and experimenting grief truly is, I had no memory of him, I only saw my mother grieving. But I understood Meg asking God to help her mother because of her faith, not because Meg knew God would help, but because her mother did. I have never been a very religious person, so I felt a little confused about the way Meg Nocero trusted God even though she felt He was not answering, I even felt she only prayed and trusted because she thought her mother wanted her to do it. In the end, I got it, we need faith, to heal, and it doesn’t matter where that faith comes from or what we believe in. I felt that I was living this transformation journey with the author, and I cannot think of a better way to explain a memoir than that.
Overall, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars I love how personal, powerful, and spiritual this book is. I cannot say anything negative about Butterfly Awakens, this book is exceptionally well-edited, I did not find errors. It is also well suited for any reader, especially those going through a painful life experience, or those like me, just trying to rediscover themselves.
