[Following is a volunteer review of "Man Mission" by Eytan Uliel.]
Man Mission by Eytan Uliel follows the life-changing adventures of four men over 15 years. Each year, these four men come together and journey to different countries, such as New Zealand, Spain, Hawaii, and South Africa. Along the way, they create lifelong memories, strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, support each other through life’s journeys, and get themselves in plenty of trouble. As they journey to exotic places, they also take the reader deeper into the ever-mysterious world of manhood.
The unnamed first-person narrator first meets Sam at law school. Their appetite for exotic foods, which they sampled at their university’s food fair, lays the foundation for their adventure-loving relationship. Along with their friends - Alec, and Daniel - they agree that the four of them will take a trip to a different country every year. Years go by without further mention of this pact until Sam calls the narrator with a burst of excitement and adrenaline encouraging him to pack his bags and embark on the very first ‘Man Mission.’ They decide to follow a hiking trail in Christchurch, New Zealand. Right from the beginning, it is apparent that they are dangerously under-prepared for the journey; however, their determination and perseverance make up for what they lack in planning and supplies. As they are sleeping in their tent, they hear strange noises outside. When the narrator bravely peeks outside to uncover the source of these noises, he is met with a pair of large glowing eyes – and this, dear reader, is only the first night!
Not only does Eytan Uliel excite the reader's appetite for adventure, but he also knowingly navigates through the realities of adulthood. He does this by highlighting the very relatable struggles of making career changes, choosing a life partner, and confronting the childhood experiences that shape the adults we become. We get to see the different lives people make for themselves through the four quite different main characters. The narrator is a self-proclaimed bookworm who likes to thoroughly consider the pros and cons before making major decisions. Sam is a witty and fun-loving man who is tired of the monotony of everyday life. Daniel; although, he does not seem like it, is a highly athletic redhead. Alec struggles to make any kind of commitment as he has had seven jobs over three years and tends to jump from one girl to the next. Also, I particularly enjoyed the insightful and relevant quotes at the beginning of each chapter.
In all honesty, there is nothing to dislike about this novel as Uliel has thoughtfully written it. I did not find any significant errors as the novel was well edited. Also, I imagine that most people will be able to relate to at least one of the characters.
After careful consideration, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Each destination that the four men and reader were taken to provided a new and exciting experience. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys adventure, travel, suspense, witty humour, and realistic fiction. It is worth noting that the novel contains strong language throughout that some readers might not enjoy.
