Without Redemption by David Griffith is a fictional, suspense-filled novel about Lonnie Bowers. Lonnie is primarily an intelligence agent working intermittently as a private contractor for Stirling Associates. The book opens with Lonnie experiencing a huge setback in his attempt to make a career transition to become a professional rodeo cowboy. To help him recuperate, Lonnie's boss, Frederick Roseman, proposes an all-expenses-paid holiday to Costa Rica for him and his family. He requests Lonnie to pick up a small paper package for him from neighboring Nicaragua whilst on holiday. Not wanting to disappoint his wife, Clarissa, Lonnie reluctantly agrees to go on the holiday. Lonnie and Clarissa excitedly set off, with their infant son, Conor, to Costa Rica determined to relax and enjoy themselves.

Like so many other young people in Mexico, Paolo, a runaway from a dysfunctional family environment, learns to survive on the streets of Sinaloa. He quickly rises through the ranks of the drug cartel underworld in Mexico as a “sicario”, a hitman for the Sinaloa drug cartel. His capability and skills soon get him selected to become part of the elite “Twelve Apostles” who guard the notorious drug lord, El Chapo.

Things quickly go catastrophically wrong when Lonnie crosses into Nicaragua to collect Frederick’s package. Lonnie, Clarissa, and Conor’s very lives are at stake as Paolo, at the behest of El Chapo, ruthlessly tracks them through the treacherous jungles of Central America.

There was so much to love about the book Without Redemption. It really has been a long time since I read a book that had me almost biting my nails in trepidation. Lonnie’s experience and superior survival skills are just not enough to redeem him and his family from the perilous situation they find themselves in. The author expertly uses his writing skills and knowledge of the land to create a sense of pervasive danger and the unrelenting setbacks Lonnie and his family experience make for a suspense-filled and intense read.

I liked the book’s take on the interesting subject of conscientious objections to taking life on Christian grounds, something which Clarissa is quite adamant about. What does one do when faced with unrelenting evil people? Is prayer alone enough for deliverance? The author skillfully creates scenarios that allow the reader to answer these questions for themselves.

The plot of Without Redemption is a familiar one and its simplicity makes for a straightforward read. A minor grievance I had with the book was that I felt that Lonnie's character, was not sufficiently developed. Although, this may be because Without Redemption is the third book in the Border Series and I have not yet had the pleasure of reading the first two.

I have given Without Redemption a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. The book is well-edited, and hardly any errors were noted. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy genres that involve suspense, danger, survival, and adventure.
