Coincidentally, today marks 59 years since my country gained independence from its colonial master, Britain, after a long struggle. Colonialism is the act of emigrants settling to a new place, but, they still remain culturally and politically tied to their place of origin. European countries have had a shameful past with regards to colonialism. They have caused subjugation of many a proud people of the Americas and Africa,in which most occasions have included horrific brutality and murder. I am sure when countries like ours, gained their independence from their colonial masters, they heaved sighs of relief and they hoped for a better future.

A Dream For Peace is the story of an Algerian born in the French colony of Algeria. Having to grow up with racial discrimination and religion difference, Ghoulem Berrah learns the French language and culture under the strict supervision of his mother. He then heads to university where he and fellow Algerians join independence revolutions that land them in trouble with the French government. Berrah remains stoic in the face of adversity. More time passes and many African countries, including his fatherland, have gained independence and they are facing challenges with regards to their socio-economic development. The now Dr. Berrah is widely involved in the global politics as a savvy diplomat in the Ivorian government. However, this is not as easy as it seems, due to the frigid Cold War and the ever mounting tensions between newly formed government in Africa.

I really fell in love with this book. In a minute way, I could identify with the story. It is a brilliant story of struggle, self discovery, love and religion written in form of an autobiography. The book has been written in a clear and concise manner such that the language is simple and easy to understand. The events taking place in the book are clearly indicated by inspiring quotes at the beginning of each chapter. The book is very interesting in that the author communicates his emotions clearly and the reader cannot help but be immersed in his life story. In the beginning, I fully expected this book to be boring as it had all the markings of a history textbook. However, I am glad to say that it surpassed all my expectations and it delivered than I originally thought.

I could not find any negative aspect. The book incorporates the use of real images and documents making it an authentic read. The images may be a little grainy and old but I attribute this to their age. The book not only discusses the need for peace but it also delves into the matters of religious tolerance. In his story Dr.Ghoulem Berrah clearly interprets that all religious beliefs in the world terminate to only one God. This admission was the crowning achievement in this book. This book appears to be exceptionally well-edited as I came across no errors. For the above reasons, I am happy to rate this book four out of four stars.

This book is suitable for an audience of all ages, however, I would not encourage a young audience due to the presence of graphic details and anxiety triggers with respect to the liberation wars. This is an educative read fit for people of all generations. This is a great book.
