Apollo’s Raven by Linnea Tanner is the first book of a historical fantasy fiction novel sequence. It showcases a great deal of research pertaining to Celtic and Roman gods. This story also depicts a few historical figures within Cantiaci and Catuvellauni kingdoms. The book begins in Britannia where the two kingdoms must commence a meeting between Celtic King Amren and Roman King Lucius Antoius. Terms must be negated which will depict the future of the Cantiaci kingdom. Marrock, Amren’s banished son, believes himself to be the Cantiaci rightful heir. During negotiations, conflicts arise as the Roman king's son, Marcellus, is held at knife point. The main character, Princess Catrin, has an immediate connection to Marcellus and urgently saves his life by speaking out against her fathers authority. The aftermath of this event determined both Marcellus and Amren’s eldest daughter to be captives in the opposing kingdoms. Marrock’s potential ill intentions with the Cantiaci kingdom, catapults Catrin into a series of events in which she is faced with numerous obstacles. She is compelled to harness her inner mystical druid powers. Catrin is also faced with having a conflicting romance with an enemy, while trying to save the future of her fathers kingdom. Obtaining the discovery of an ominous curse hanging over Catrins head, she is sent through a sequence of revelations and discovery.

The writing style of this novel kept the reader in a constant state of intrigue on what happens next. The details of physical fight scenes is something to be enamored with and leaves the reader with vivid displays of the characters actions. There were few instances where there was a lapse in peak interest in the story. Between the different first person perspectives of multiple characters and Catrins view the reader is kept entranced in events that are happening around the main character. This was such an interesting concept that was included in the writing and fit within the story without any gaps or confusing transitions. Due to being entranced within the story, the detailed writing of the author, and the ease of following along, I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars.

The author did an excellent job of setting the historical and mythological scene for readers, although, it may be foreseeable that some readers may lose interest or gain confusion within reading if they do not have previous knowledge on mythology and history pertaining to Roman and Celtic kingdoms from the book. The only critique towards this book would be that the author includes a prelude or information before the book begins to set the scene for the reader. Even without prior knowledge; this book has an amazing storyline that would keep most audiences captivated.

The most suitable audience for Apollo’s Raven would be anyone who enjoys mythologic, fantasy and a sprinkle of romance within their books. This novel has an excellent balance of a variety of genres and is an incredible read for someone looking for a relatively fast paced book.
