[Following is a volunteer review of "Shine a Light" by Nicky Corcoran.]
Shine a Light by Nicky Corcoran is a book of poems. The poems span a range of topics. Some are followed by a brief explanation of why they were written.
Corcoran’s poems are written with optimism and a caring attitude. They are fun to read. In some cases, they are written in a way to motivate others and to remind them of the good qualities that they have.
Corcoran’s compassionate worldview shows through what she writes about. She chooses to write about sensitive topics, which allows her to address issues that have deep significance for many people. By addressing each issue one by one, she makes all the confusion and the chaos of the world seem easier to handle. She brings to mind a controlled, measured manner of rectifying the negative trajectory of the world. Her optimism is prominent in the way she addresses sensitive topics.
She writes in a way that calls attention to the struggles and tragedies of various aspects of life. She instills a sense of appreciation by slowing down to look at the significance of things like the struggles of British Army recruits and carers. She also writes about pleasant topics. The way she writes about pleasant experiences is heartwarming. The way she writes about them reminiscences on the sentimentality of life. Through all the topics she writes about, her worldview comes across as one that sees the need to recognize all that is wrong with the world. At the same time, it recognizes the positive aspects of life and the capacity for life to improve.
Many of her poems are long. This makes them fun to read because they build up an elaborate and detailed picture of what she is writing about. Their long lengths also help drill home the points she is trying to make. For poems about the downs of life, their long lengths help to drill home a sense of sympathy for suffering and of hope. For poems that are about pleasant aspects of life, their long lengths help to drill home a sense of joy and an appreciation for the simplicity of life.
I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. There weren't many grammatical errors. To me, there was nothing negative about the book.
This book has only 67 pages. Therefore, someone who is looking for a quick read of some uplifting poems would enjoy this book. It is also recommended for anyone that likes poems, for those interested in some of the world’s pressing problems, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and for anyone who has problems that they are struggling with and thinks that they would benefit from reading positive, uplifting words.
