Not many books give away the story just from the title, unlike this one. Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula by R.F. Kristi tells us a tale of cats employing their detective skills in a rescue endeavor in North Korea.

At the onset of this story, Cordon Bleu, a French chef, invites Missy to South Korea because of her tasty cheese creation and has asked her to be a judge in a cooking competition. However, on reaching South Korea, there’s a twist that needs Missy to travel with her family to North Korea. As the story progresses, we understand that Missy is Inca’s mom, and their family consists of Missy, Inca the cat, and her friends. Curious to know why Inca and friends went to North Korea? Read this fascinating book to find out!

Reading a book can handily tell you if the author knows her onion. Kristi gave a precise comparison and description of Northern and Southern Korea using fine writing and detailed pictorial representations. While Kristi used easy language because of the target audience, one can still see that she is a wordsmith.

A striking theme in this book is teamwork, which is a good lesson for children to appreciate at a young age. Despite the threat in the reprieve mission and the conspiracy hatched by Enzo, Inca and her buddies remained resilient. As a reader, I felt the passion, courage, and commitment of every character in this book. I believe this is a result of the detailed writing from Kristi.

Imagining a cat and a dog cooperating was funny, especially knowing that these two animals cannot coexist. Yet what an exquisite collaboration between Terrance, the detective dog, and Inca, the cat detective. These were amusing moments in the book.

I have read the previous book from this series. It was not as excellent as this one, but not bad. Nonetheless, I must say that Kristi outdid herself on this one. I did not find any errors while reading. The book was faultlessly well-edited. There was nothing to dislike about it. It deserves a perfect four out of four stars. I would recommend this book to children from grade one to grade five.

I applaud the author for applying such creativity in a children's book. Unraveling how cats prove themselves useful in the almost impenetrable North Korea will surely be a good read. Thanks for the review.
