[Following is a volunteer review of "Defining Moments of a Free Man from a Black Stream" by Dr Frank L Douglas.]
Frank L. Douglas' memoir, Defining Moments of a Free Man from a Black Stream, is an inspiring and intriguing memoir of a young black man who grew up in abject poverty and rose to become one of the world's preeminent pharmaceutical scientists.
This autobiography is about Dr. Frank L. Douglas, and it describes the struggles of a young man dealing with childhood trauma in his home country, as well as his progress in life despite a lack of financial resources. Douglas left British Guiana (Guyana) for the United States to study at Lehigh University and later at Cornell University and Cornell University Medical School after securing a scholarship through unwavering dedication. The culture shock he experiences upon arrival has an impact on him, as he witnesses unprecedented levels of racial discrimination. In many cases, he later becomes a victim of this false ideology. Douglas joined the John Hopkins hospital and received a National Institute of Health fellowship to work as a clinical associate during his residency. I like how the book highlights the racial discrimination trend in educational institutions and businesses. As an African-American, Douglas faced numerous instances of racial discrimination. In one case, he is denied a promotion because of his ethnicity. He also noticed a lot of ethnic favoritism in school. He starts researching the subject, revealing his startling discoveries in the book. I also like how, despite the presence of formidable obstacles, the memoir instills hope. I have never been so grateful for a specific scene until I got to the part where Douglas met Professor Daen, who demonstrated empathy as he was aware of the author's struggles and how he assisted him in navigating a critical stage in his life.
The author is also straightforward and honest; he did not skirt major issues, preferring to express his views openly. This conveys a sense of assurance about the book's contents and the author's overall point of view. This direct style of writing appeals to me because it eliminates unnecessary details and makes it clear where the author stands on various issues. I also appreciate the author's powerful back-story, highlighting incidents from his childhood that helped shape his fortitude. Growing up in poverty and unsure of how he would pay for his education, Douglas became aware of the challenges others like him faced and worked hard to make the best of what was available.
I wouldn't say I liked that the book contained a lot of technical descriptions. However, it was exceptionally well edited as I found no errors. Therefore, I rate Defining Moments of a Free Man from a Black Stream 4 out of 4 stars.
I recommend the book to readers fond of memoirs, especially those reflecting personal and ethnic identity and racial discrimination.
