The main character Buchanan "Buck" Palasinski didn't have it easy. Ex-soldier, scarred from personal loss and war an nerd now working as a hitman, struggling financially on a daily basis and thus taking one job after another. One day he accepts a kill from the wrong people and becomes the victim himself. Thinking this was this end he accepted his fate, but meanwhile Death is overworked and his assistant forces him on vacation. Death decides to take an intern and chooses the recently deceased Buchanan Palsinski for an internship as his helper. Death gives him the choice: either purgatory or this new occupation. The choice isn't hard, is it? Whilst adjusting to his responsibilities Buck realizes there seems to be more to his first job than he might think and a jumpy ride begins.

A Dead End Job explores the myths of this world such as vampires, zombies, witches and so much more. It shows the hidden creatures of the world and Justin Alcala, the author, gives an idea of how they might hide themselves or live among us.

What stood out for me was Buck's amusingly nerdy personality trait. According to the About the Author section in the book, this can be seen as a parallel to Justin Alcala. I found it fascinating how present this undertone was throughout the book. This was particularly interesting because you had glimpses of Buck's free time and could thus immerse yourself in his environment.

I found most entertaining to read about the way Buck dealt with his new fate and how the author created a believable character who finds himself in an unimaginable situation whose reaction you can relate to. His quick examination of the new internship situation and his various options and how he comes to his decisions is particularly interesting to follow.

The book is extremely amusing and an easy read, which I recommend to any person who wants to take an entertaining hilly ride and enjoy a mystic world, filled with sarcasm and action. I have nothing negative to say about the reading and I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
