Luke was not happy. His father had run off with another woman, leaving him and his mother to fend for themselves. His mother believed that marriage should last forever and decided to seek out the woman who stole her husband. She intended to kill this woman for the bad thing she had done. For years, they traveled searching for the woman and the stolen husband. During these years, Luke met a lot of different people and had many experiences. Eventually, he met Pastor David, who introduced him to an eternal father who would never leave him.

Hearts Set Free by Jess Lederman is a Christian novel but is not clichéd. It did not contain the holier-than-thou feeling that most Christian books have. I found this book to be a very empowering read. This book is a combination of mystery, historical fiction, and romance, all wrapped up in one. After reading the first two chapters, I thought this book was a combination of short stories. Reading further, I realized it was written in both present and past tense from the first and third-person perspectives. After a few chapters in, I saw how the lives of the characters intertwined and everything started making sense. In the present day, the character Joan wanted an interview with Luke. We are given Luke's back story and how he came to know Christ as his Lord and Savior. I liked how the book was structured. The storyline was interesting without being too preachy.

There were many characters in the book, and at first, I found myself confusing Pastor David with Pastor Daniel. Their names were similar, and they were both pastors, but the difference was that one belonged in the past and one was in the present. There was nothing that affected my reading experience. The book had some relatable characters with realistic problems. My favorite character was Pastor David. He admitted that he used to copy someone else's sermon and would preach just to promote his boxing matches. One lesson in this book was that while we might fail in our walk with God, there is always a way to redeem ourselves.

I only found one typing error in Hearts Set Free, so I can say it had been professionally edited. It deserves a perfect score of 4 out of 4 stars. Luke's journey was inspiring, and he was a well-developed character. I liked that the book contained a lot of other themes than the Christian theme. Each character had a minor plot that tied in perfectly with the main plot.

I would recommend this book to Christians who wish to improve their faith in God. The lives of the characters are very inspiring and cause a reader to evaluate their own lives. I would also recommend this book to mystery lovers as there was the mystery of a murdered pastor.
