Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure by Catherine Anna Pepe is a children's book inspired by the author's brother Donny. This book is the first volume of Catherine's book. Donny was born with Down syndrome. His addition to their family gave them a new perspective on appreciating everyday life. Every day, Donny would shout his favorite phrase: 'Today is the greatest day of my life!'

This work of fiction inspired by Donny's life follows the story of two children whose lives were about to change. Donny and Mary Grace were living and enjoying life in Wichita when their parents were sent on a mission to Africa. This meant that Donny and Mary Grace had to relocate to California to live with their grandparents. There, they experience a wonderful journey of adventure and discoveries.

What I loved most about this book is Mary Grace's genuine love for her brother Donny. She accepted him and accommodated him as he was. Having a brother with special needs myself, I resonated with her authentic care and affection. I also love the fact that Donny's Down syndrome was portrayed as a superpower. For a children's book, I found this fitting. Donny's joy at all times was infectious and helped those around him deal with difficult situations through his positivity. I thought that was wonderful. I loved Mary Grace's honest expression of her feelings. This will teach children that it is okay to feel all kinds of emotions as long as they don't allow themselves to be carried away.

There was nothing I did not like about this book. It scored perfectly in its goal of presenting the adventures of the two children. I believe children will enjoy reading this book.

Since there was nothing that I did not like, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book is also exceptionally edited. I recommend this book to children between 4 and 10 years. It will also help children understand Down syndrome and how to treat people with special needs. It can, therefore, be read by a children's book club.
