[Following is a volunteer review of "Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure" by Catherine A. Pepe.]
Mary Grace is a ten-year-old who lives in Wichita with her parents and her five-year-old brother, Donny, who has Down syndrome. When Mary Grace's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Miller, decided to go to Africa as missionaries, Mary Grace and her brother Donny had to stay with their grandparents in California. During their stay in California, the two children are enrolled at North Elementary School. But what happens when Mary Grace starts receiving weird notes at her new school? Who's sending these threatening notes to Mary Grace? Will Mary Grace be able to solve this mystery? To find out, read Catherine A. Pepe's Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure.
Honestly, I found this book an interesting and engaging read. There were many positive aspects that readers could learn from this book. For example, readers will learn how to treat children with disabilities with special care and to always keep them positive, like how Donny's family treated Donny with love and care, mostly Mary Grace. The characters were also well-developed, and my favourite was Mary Grace. I was really impressed with how she handled the situation of her bullying so maturely.
I also liked how the author included sketch pictures at the beginning of each chapter, which also acted as hints as to what the reader would find in the chapter. For example, we see a drawing of an aeroplane, and in that chapter we get to see Donny and Mary Grace travel to California by plane. I also appreciated how Catherine highlights the importance of friendship, love, and care. The language used by the author was also simple, which made the book easy to understand.
Nevertheless, I found nothing to dislike about this book. I believe this book was professionally edited as I found a few errors while reading it. The author's writing style was also commendable, which made the book easy to understand. As a result, I give Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure a rating of four out of four stars.
I would recommend this book to children over six years old and adults who enjoy reading children's books. People who are interested in adventure novels would also love to read this book. I also recommend this book to teachers as they will learn different ways they can handle bullying and how to care for children with disabilities in their schools.
