[Following is a volunteer review of "Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure" by Catherine A. Pepe.]
When Donny gets lost in the zoo when he's still very young, her parents can't stop thinking of the many possibilities. Her mother thinks he may be in the pond with the alligators or back with the monkeys. His sister Mary Grace doesn't waste a second in looking for her brother. She gets help from two other boys whom she didn't expect help from. Everyone is helpful in his search and they finally find him. Donny is not like other normal kids and requires special attention. Their family is a happy one until their parents have to travel to Africa for missionary work. They have to take them to California to live with their grandparents.
The idea of going to California is not good for Mary Grace. But after talking with her parents, she gets to learn several good virtues. The book is good for children since it teaches the values of being obedient and also respectful of their parent's decisions. Mary Grace and Donny also learn that helping those in need is also a good thing that they should learn. I also learned that you should not judge a book by its cover from when the boys helped Mary Grace look for Donny. Parents also learn that it's good to take a gentle approach toward their children when they are angry and explain to them how the situations may affect them.
Being a children's book, I think it should have contained more illustrations. The font size is also small for children. Another issue I noticed is the book may be a bit boring for children because of its length and some of the details included that are unnecessarily long. This is not to say that the book is not interesting because it is much interesting. I only didn't like the fact that the book portrayed Africa as very poor. These are the only negative aspects I encountered.
I rate Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe 4 out of 4 stars. I found the book humorous and it also portrayed the challenges kids face as they grow up. I did not find any grammatical errors and I deduce that the book was exceptionally well edited. I also appreciated the personalities of Mr. and Mrs. Miller as parents.
I recommend this book to readers of all ages, especially those aged 6 and above. The book contains lessons on using polite words such as 'thank you and please'. These values are essentially important for growing children. All this is the wonderful and interesting story of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure by Catherine A. Pepe.
